The Mercury Sable, introduced in 1985, was a pivotal model in Mercury's lineup, transitioning the brand's mid-size offerings to front-wheel drive and serving as a counterpart to the Ford Taurus.
It was reintroduced in 2008 as a full-size sedan before being discontinued in 2009.
From 2002 to 2009, the Sable offered a range of engines, starting with a 3.0L Vulcan V6 producing 153 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission.
By 2009, it featured a 3.5L Duratec V6 delivering 263 horsepower and 249 lb-ft of torque, available with all-wheel drive (AWD) and a 6-speed automatic transmission.
This marked a significant performance improvement over earlier models.

Fifth Generation: 2008-2009
The fifth-generation Mercury Sable (2008-2009) featured a 3.5L Duratec V6 engine producing 263 hp and 249 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Front-wheel drive was standard, with all-wheel drive available for the first time.
A notable engineering aspect was the internally mounted, timing chain-driven water pump, which, while innovative, posed significant reliability risks due to potential engine damage upon failure.
